Today match prediction: read the cricket match yourself

A way of reading helps for the whole season, and that is what this page gives you, together with the basic rules of cricket in one place.

Plenty of pages promise a today match prediction 100 sure and a ready verdict. Here you get the frame instead: with it your own reading comes together in about half an hour, and it works again for the next match and the one after.

Short answer

A match prediction is not a forecast. It is the sorting of everything known before the first ball, so that your decision becomes clear.

Seven steps cover most matches: schedule and format, the pitch, the toss, recent form in context, squad make-up, the market, and finally one sentence of your own.

In Bengali. The Bengali edition is the main version of this site and carries the same method with local examples: বাংলা সংস্করণ.

Seven steps before the toss

  1. Schedule and format

Which format, day or night, which city: every other calculation starts here. A day game on a fresh pitch and a night game under dew are different matches, even with the same two teams.

  2. Pitch

How much grass, what the average score was in the last games at this ground, and whether the ball turned in the second innings. More on the pitch report.

  3. Toss and decision

What captains usually choose here after winning the toss, and why: the toss.

  4. Recent form

The last few results, always with the opponent and the conditions next to them: form in context.

  5. Squad make-up

How many spinners, how settled the opening pair is, whether there is a finisher. The eleven is named at the toss, so work from the typical eleven.

  6. Choosing the market

The question your notes answer most clearly is the market to use, and the price comes after that.

  7. Your limit

Decide the amount and the time before the match starts, and write both down.

How a match prediction is built

A good reading rests on five factors, and they do not weigh the same. The chart below is an example of how the weight is usually shared in a T20 match. It is not a forecast for any game; it shows which factor earns how much attention.

Example: how much each factor weighs in a T20 match
Pitch and conditions
Recent form
Toss and decision
Head to head
Squad make-up

The weights move with the format and the ground: in a Test the pitch weighs more, in an ODI form says more. Details on the cricket prediction page.

Analysis and «sure tips» are two different things

What is analysis and what is a trap
  • It shows reasonsWhy one side is ahead is explained with pitch, form and squad.
  • It names the unknownsWhat could turn the match is written down separately.
  • It leaves the call to youThe last word stays with the reader.
  • It says «100% sure»Cricket has no certainty. Whoever claims it is selling.
  • It sells «inside news»A fixing story: a crime and a fraud at once.
  • It knows the toss in advanceThe toss is a coin, and nobody knows it early.

The ground, two teams and one innings

In the middle of the ground lies a 22-yard pitch with stumps at each end. One side bats, with two batters on the field at a time. The other side bowls and fields with all eleven players. The innings ends when the batting side loses ten wickets or when the allotted overs run out.

Six legal balls, from one end
One innings

Wicket

Wide and no-ball
An extra run, and the ball is bowled again
Result

Maiden over
An over with no runs scored

Where runs come from

Sources of runs

What happenedRunsWhen it shows up most
The batters ran1, 2 or 3On big grounds, in the middle overs
The ball rolled over the boundary4On a fast outfield
The ball cleared the boundary in the air6Short boundaries, death overs
Wide or no-ball1, plus a free hit after a no-ballUnder dew, in pressure overs
Byes and leg byes1 to 4When the bounce is uneven
Stumps and bails against the floodlights

The main ways a wicket falls

How wickets fall

TypeWhat happensWhere it is most common
BowledThe ball hits the stumps directlyWith the new ball, with yorkers
CaughtA fielder takes the ball before it landsMost common in every format
LBWThe ball hits the pad and would have hit the stumpsOn turning pitches
Run outThe stumps are broken while the batters runIn the rush of the last overs
StumpedThe keeper breaks the stumps when the batter leaves the creaseAgainst spinners

Which dismissals pile up tells you the character of the pitch. More LBWs and stumpings mean the ball is turning; more catches mean there is bounce. The pitch report section shows this reading layer by layer.

How many overs is the powerplay, and what are the rules

The powerplay is the part of an innings when fewer fielders may stand outside the 30-yard circle. With more gaps in the field, this is when runs come fastest. The split depends on the format.

How the powerplay is split

FormatWhich oversMost fielders outside the circle
T20First 6 overs2
ODI, first phaseOvers 1 to 102
ODI, middle phaseOvers 11 to 404
ODI, final phaseOvers 41 to 505

For a reading this means something simple: a wicket in the powerplay changes the pace of the whole innings, and once the field spreads at the end, ones and twos come easily. The cricket prediction page shows which phase matters most in which format.

When rain comes: the Duckworth Lewis method

When overs are lost, the target changes too, and the sum is done with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. It balances two resources: how many overs are left and how many wickets are in hand. That is why 120 for 5 and 120 for 1 are not the same thing. If the game becomes too short, the match is abandoned, and the market rules for an abandoned match apply.

One thing about the Duckworth Lewis method: the full calculation runs in ICC-approved software and cannot be matched by hand from outside. The real figure comes from the ground, so wait for the official revised target before you decide anything.

Today match prediction, the short version

If you only have a minute before the toss, the whole method folds into four lines. They are the same in Bengali and in English, and they carry most evenings.

  • Surface and coin first: the pitch and the toss decide the tempo of both innings long before the first boundary.
  • Results need an address: note whom each win came against and on which ground, and the form line starts telling the truth.
  • Price as a percentage: divide one by the rate, and remember the operator margin sits inside every number.
  • One line of your own: if the reason for your call fits in a sentence, the today match prediction is ready; if not, the evening has other matches.

Common questions

Does a cricket prediction guarantee the result?

No. A prediction is an organised reading of what is known before the match. One catch, one injury or a rain break can change the result.

Where do I get today’s playing XI and live scores?

From the board or the broadcaster: the eleven is named at the toss and the score changes every ball. This site shows what to look for and how to read it.

Where should a beginner start?

With the pitch report, then the toss, then form. Once those three make sense, the rest comes easily.

Where can I see a today match prediction?

Use the seven steps on this page instead of a ready-made pick: pitch, toss, form and squad give you your own call in about half an hour.

Is a today cricket match prediction reliable?

It is reliable when it gives reasons. A result stated without reasons is a guess.

How many laws of cricket are there?

The official Laws of Cricket number 42, from the field, ball and bat to umpires and the types of dismissal. A viewer needs only a handful: overs, innings, runs and dismissals.

How many overs is the powerplay?

In T20, the first six overs. In an ODI there are three phases, overs 1 to 10, 11 to 40 and 41 to 50, each with its own limit on fielders outside the circle.

How many overs does a Test match have?

An innings has no over limit. A day’s play is scheduled for 90 overs and the match lasts up to five days, so time is the real limit.
